Robert Redford

1936-2025

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Robert Redford, whom we warmly referred to as Bob.

Bob believed, with unwavering optimism, that we can build a better world. And he proved this with his actions. His vision and determination seeded countless movements that continue to protect our planet.

Bob’s art, activism, and steadfast advocacy reflected his conviction that film and storytelling can change the world, a belief that inspired him and his son Jamie to create The Redford Center. His work has elevated voices that might otherwise have gone unheard and moved generations of filmmakers, organizers, and citizens to take bold action for the environment.

As stewards of his vision, The Redford Center honors his extraordinary legacy. We commit to carrying forward the work he and Jamie began. We will keep championing the films and filmmakers who ignite change and who defend our planet.

Bob showed us that hope is a discipline and that creativity can be a force for justice. His light and optimism will guide us as we carry on his vision for a world in which all beings can thrive.

“Let us rise above the fray and focus on what unites us: our fate, as humans, that rests upon the earth.”

20 years of advancing environmental solutions through the power of stories that move.

We’re an independent environmental nonprofit co-founded in 2005 by activists and filmmakers Robert Redford and James Redford.

The environment is our mission, and film is our medium.

The conversation about climate has changed. 8 in 10 Americans believe climate change is happening – the story of what comes next is in our hands. It’s time to equip our communities with the tools to transform public awareness into action. We need more voices demanding change and more stories about solutions we can implement now.

At The Redford Center, we believe that film is one of the most powerful tools to shift culture, build empathy, represent frontline communities, and move people into action for our environment. For more than 20 years, we’ve produced and supported 150 films and campaigns as one of the only US-based nonprofits solely dedicated to environmental impact filmmaking.

“Our planet’s resources are limited, but there’s no limit to the human imagination and our capacity to solve bigger problems. And only by acting now and standing together can we begin to tip the scales and change the course of human history.”
