The Sea Farmers

As climate change reshapes Maine’s coast, kelp has emerged as a crop that could restore the sea, sustain livelihoods, and preserve a way of life on the water. The Sea Farmers, a feature documentary, is a human portrait of kelp farmers in Casco Bay, Maine, fighting desperately to stay afloat in a changing world.

Vulnerable and exposed, coastal communities are both the frontline and the early warning system for challenges ahead. Maine’s coast has become an unexpected harbinger of some of our planet’s most existential threats. Rising temperatures and acidification are rapidly transforming the ocean, threatening marine life and the livelihoods of those who have depended on it for generations. The sea may no longer be the life-sustaining resource it once was, and climate change is an urgent threat to the environment and, by extension, to job security and deeply rooted, generational, cultural identities.

Rather than waiting to be saved, some are forging a new path through kelp farming, a practice that sits at the intersection of climate resilience, sustainable food systems, and economic survival. The farmers who brave freezing winds to seed lines, pull icy kelp from the water in the depths of winter, and haul hundred-pound anchors over their boats by hand are motivated by something deeper than profit. For them, this work is about identity, heritage, and preserving a way of life.

At the heart of the film are the kelp farmers themselves. Their personal and professional challenges, on and off the water, drive our story forward. Through their experiences, questions, friendships, and the wins and losses they share, we are immersed in a tight-knit community navigating profound change together.

Our story begins in the fall of 2024, when Maine’s kelp industry had grown from a decade of experimentation into a promising new sector. Farmers had learned how to plant seed and harvest over a million pounds of kelp each year despite brutal weather, grueling labor, and uncertain markets. While the American appetite for seaweed remained a question, promise, and hope were the resounding themes on the water. But as the industry expanded, new challenges emerged. It became clear that the future of kelp farming would not unfold as easily as many had imagined. Market instability, shifting environmental conditions, and the financial realities of scaling a new industry began to test the promise that once seemed within reach.

The Sea Farmers follows the farmers who remain, those committed to making kelp work despite mounting pressures. As they navigate climate change, shifting markets, and the realities of building a new industry from the ground up, they are not only trying to sustain their livelihoods but also helping shape the future of Maine’s working waterfront.
