The Last Floating Garden (El l Último Jardín Flotante)
In Mexico City’s canals, a father and son fight urbanization to protect their Indigenous heritage. Driven to preserve an ancient style of regenerative permaculture, they confront the climate crisis. Supported by a strong community and local culinary leaders, their mission offers a beacon of hope for a better world.
The Last Floating Garden is an urgent call to action tracking the fight for food sovereignty in Mexico City’s Xochimilco canals. Centered on pre-Hispanic chinampa farming, this regenerative system offers solutions to the modern climate crisis. However, it faces extinction as a population of 22 million relies on multinational corporations for 80% of its food. The documentary follows Don Felipe Capultitla, an Indigenous farmer cultivating organic crops against systemic exploitation. After Felipe’s sudden death, his son Pedro returns from the city to save their heritage. Backed by celebrated local chefs like Elena Reygadas, Gabriela Cámara, and Eduardo García, Pedro connects traditional agriculture with high-end culinary markets. Ultimately, the film celebrates the resilience of Indigenous wisdom. It positions local food systems not just as a piece of history, but as an essential blueprint for a sustainable global future.
