Let No One Lose Heart
A grandmother of 12 from a Louisiana farm town founded by freed slaves discovers she and her neighbors have been exposed to poison for decades. She organizes against the petrochemical industry and becomes a renowned environmental activist. But even in success, can she overcome the unchanging realities of the very place she’s fighting to save?
Let No One Lose Heart tells the story of Sharon Lavigne, a schoolteacher fighting the toxic petrochemical pollution poisoning and killing her neighbors in plain sight. This feature documentary tells Sharon’s story, exposing the historic injustices of industrial pollution and environmental racism, and connects these issues and the climate crisis.
Halfway down the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge to New Orleans, on a sleepy stretch of road, Sharon Lavigne of St. James Parish, Louisiana, is confronted by the existential threat of our time. In 2018, after hearing about impending plans for a massive petrochemical industrial complex less than two miles away from her home, the retired special education school teacher discovered that the industrial stacks that dotted the skyline her entire adult life were emitting toxic chemicals into the air, poisoning and killing her neighbors in plain sight. Let No Lose Heart tells the story of Sharon and Shamyra Lavigne as they take on the petrochemical industry and its emissions in St. James Parish, part of Louisiana’s Cancer Alley.
