Our Seeds
In a remote village in northeastern Turkey, a farming couple fights to preserve a 1,500-year-old ancestral seed. But as their children forge their own paths away from the land, they must confront a painful truth: the seed’s survival can no longer depend on the family alone.
ORUÇ (52) and GÜNEŞ (40) have spent their lives cultivating a rare wheat seed, a sacred inheritance passed down through generations. Their farm, nestled in the rugged landscape of northeastern Turkey, is more than a home—it is a living testament to an ancient way of life. Every spring, they sow, harvest, and mill the grain by hand, turning it into the bread that sustains them. Though the seed is difficult to grow and yields are modest, they believe it carries a vital legacy, one that must endure.
But the world is changing. Their eldest son, ÜMİT (22), has just returned from military service, preparing to marry and move to the city—far from the fields his father hoped he would inherit. DURU (14), their daughter, dreams of becoming an aerospace engineer and has already left home for school. Their youngest son, OGÜN (10), watches it all unfold through a child’s eyes, sensing the quiet fractures forming within the family.
With each passing season, the burden of preservation grows heavier. A worsening climate, economic and political turmoil, and shifting agricultural policies make survival more uncertain than ever. ORUÇ, once unwavering in his belief, begins to see the limits of his control and a growing uncertain future. GÜNEŞ, the family’s emotional anchor, is the person the family always leans on in times of family breakdown, but now she struggles to balance their traditions and hopes with the
realities of an unforgiving era.
As their children’s futures diverge from their own, ORUÇ and GÜNEŞ make a radical choice: to entrust their ancestral seed not to their bloodline, but to the community. They share their wheat with neighboring farmers, hoping that by scattering its roots, it might endure beyond their lifespan. Yet, as their mill grows silent and the weight of uncertainty deepens, they are forced to ask—can a legacy survive when the hands meant to carry it forward let go? The end of the story will be determined by the decision they must take whether to continue the milling or not.
