Been Here Stay Here
  • Set on Tangier Island in Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay, described as “America’s first climate casualty,” a vanishing island often reduced to political shorthand, Been Here Stay Here offers a quiet and deeply human look at a place long used as a symbol but rarely heard on its own terms.

Through the eyes of those who call the island home, the film reveals a community bound by faith, memory and a devotion to place, even as the land around them disappears. There are no narrators or experts, only the rhythms of everyday life unfolding against the slow encroachment of the sea.

Director David Usui invites us to listen closely. What emerges is not a story about denial, but about devotion: to each other, to the water and to resilience.

  • David Usui has spent more than 15 years crafting character-driven documentaries featured by The New York Times, PBS, ITVS, The Atlantic, and VICE. His collaboration with Albert Maysles on In Transit premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and received the Special Jury Prize for Best Feature Documentary.

As co-founder of Lost & Found Films, Usui has worked with NGOs, broadcasters, and brands to tell stories rooted in empathy and place. He also teaches at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, guiding new storytellers to approach the world with curiosity and compassion.

Available to stream from October 15th – October 22nd at 11:30 PM PST.
